The iPhone has an app for almost anything, now including an app to start your car.

Directed Electronics, the company behind the well known Viper car alarm and remote start systems for automobiles, is venturing into the iPhone app arena. Their new application/hardware bundle for the iPhone looks pretty handy.

It can:

Lock/arm
Unlock/disarm
Remote car starter
Trunk release
Panic or car finder

Of course, this isn’t just a simple application that magically takes the place of your key fob. It requires a Viper hardware interface on the vehicle and a yearly subscription. If you already have a compatible Viper alarm/remote start kit, SmartStart will run you $299. If you’re starting from scratch with no existing equipment, $499. Then there’s a $30/year service fee.

It’s an interesting idea- if not a bit overpriced. Cutting edge auto-gurus will love this.

Find out more at the Viper SmartStart Website.
