#5 – Driving erratically keeps them guessing

Chet Atkins once said, “Once you become predicable, no one’s interested anymore.”  I don’t know who Chet Atkins is, but I do know that mixing up your driving style is an easy way to keep time behind the wheel very interesting.

Hybrid owners seem to keep to this rule the most. Using up a mile to accelerate to 35mph is ok because after all, you’re not using any gas in the process. In the same turn, 50mph on an interstate is another great way to let everyone know you’re driving economically and for good reason. If you can pull this one off while systematically holding up traffic you get extra mother-nature bonus points, as you’ll be causing them to use less fuel too.

On the other hand, rapid acceleration and braking serves an equally important purpose. It lets everyone know you’re a wild child, live by doing the unexpected, and are a very interesting person. It’s also a great way to show off your new high-flow exhaust. How else would everyone know how sweet it sounds?

There are however exceptions to this rule. Have you ever followed someone who was going 40mph in a 50mph zone, only to keep going 40mph when the limit dropped to 30mph? Driving consistently and irresponsibly at the same time takes a huge amount of talent so appreciate these particular fellow drivers when you come across them.

#4 – I paid good money for those rear fog lamps

In Europe, rear facing fog lamps are a common safety device. Here in the states, it’s a sign of luxury.

I’m sure many of you have seen a Volkswagen, Audi, or BMW (some of the few makes that keep rear fog lamps when importing their models) with what seems to be an always on brake light. Have no fear- that super expensive import is functioning properly.

Across the pond rear fog lamps are used in bad weather to keep vehicles visible at high speed (like on the Autobahn).  Here in the US they are an easy way to show off how much money you’ve spent on your new European car anytime you please.  Who cares if you’re blinding the person behind you?  This tip also goes along very well with #5 because when you turn on your rear fogs it’s much harder to see your brake lights. That will keep things interesting, huh?

An added benefit of using rear fog lamps is that tailgaters will be a problem of the past. Who in their right mind will follow you if they are going lose their ability to see in the process?  It’s win-win for you and that’s what driving expensive cars is all about.

#3 – Turn signals are for wimps

Chet Atkins once said… oh crap, I used that quote already.  Just remember, if you use your turn signals other drivers know your intentions. Do you really want other people to know what you’re thinking? Nuff said…

#2 – High-beams are for when I need to see better, not you silly

If not for headlights we’d never be able to drive at night.  Thankfully, all cars come with headlights standard. Better yet, all cars come with high-beams standard too. Just like rear-facing fog lamps, if it’s there, you can and should use them whenever you want.

The best places to use high beams are, well anywhere it’s dark and you want to see better.  Just like rear facing fog lamps, high-beams are for your safety and your safety alone.  As an added benefit, they help other vehicles know that you’re there and keep them from accidentally running into you.  If you’re following someone, high beams can help illuminate the road in front of them too.  See, they can’t get mad if you’re just trying to help.

Something important to note- headlights never need adjusting. They come from the factory perfectly aligned and will never ever need to be re-aligned.  Just don’t even attempt it.  Should you think you need to get your headlights aligned, the solution is… forward facing fog lights. The brighter the better! Just don’t turn them off or your improved vision will suffer.

#1 – Become the passing lane’s biggest fan

Perhaps the greatest invention of motoring is the interstate passing lane. What better way to show your adoration for this modern marvel than to drive there exclusively?  Sure, it has “passing” in its name but don’t worry, it’s just like parking in your driveway or driving on the parkway.   Plus, to think the government would pave a whole extra lane on the highway just for passing is absurd. What a waste! It’s there taking up space- make sure you use it always and often.

An added benefit of the “passing lane” is it’s ability to allow you let other people know how much you disapprove of their actions on the road.  Have you ever spied someone driving too quickly in your rear-view mirror but never knew what you could do about it? Duh… just pull out in front of them! Don’t be startled if they start flashing their head-lights or using a left turn-signal. That driver is just letting you know how much they appreciate you looking out for their safety by slowing them and everyone around you down to below the speed limit. Smile- you’re doing a great job!

With over 110,000 spectators in attendance, the Red Bull Soap Box Derby in Los Angeles, CA was truly an amazing event. People from all over crowded in  to the city streets to see the spectacle… people even scaled up the side of nearby buildings just to have a better view of everything going on.

The day started with pit road being open to the public to allow spectators meet the teams and see their wild and crazy creations. The craftsmanship into the soap box race cars was truly amazing, everything from cardboard to fiberglass to welded metal and custom paint was utilized in the various race car builds. Each racer was truly a piece of art and most teams had fun themes to go along with their car. After everything was set, the Red Bull sponsored Nascar race vehicle drove up and down the track with high revs and squealing tires to get everyone excited for what was to come next. Then everyone was suddenly looking up into the sky as a Red Bull themed parachuter came soaring down through the clouds with a smoke stream shooting from his feet.

With that… it was time for the racing to begin. The course itself had slight turns through out with one major peaked turn by the celebrity judging stand in the middle of the track. There were also other elements such as jumps in the middle of the downhill track that made it quite the spectacle.

LOS ANGELES – September 26, 2009 – Red Bull Soapbox Race Los Angeles brought out the Wild Things, the Tin Man and a team of firemen…oh yeah, and did we mention the crowd of 111,000?!? Despite the rising temperatures, Angelenos came out in droves to watch 40 homemade soapboxes from across the US race through Downtown L.A.’s streets. The urban course caused crash after crash with jumps, a 90-degree turn and tight chicanes, but some teams managed to master the elements and tore through the finish line at lightning speed – with three teams reaching over 45mph!

San Francisco’s Team Ironheade claimed the top podium spot and a V.I.P. NASCAR experience with their soapbox modeled after the soon-to-be-released video game Brütal Legend. Their blistering speed and heavy metal rock theme tore the course to shreds, and with it, the competition. And they now go into the Red Bull Soapbox Race record books for achieving the fasted speed ever – 46.1mph. The team driver, Sean Feeley, “just tried to keep two wheels on the ground, but by the end I didn’t have any brakes!” Local team Ludicrous Speed!!! took second place with their Winnebago and memorable skit based on the movie Spaceballs. The third place team also won the People’s Choice Award (decided by spectator text messaging), and they aren’t even from L.A.! Denver’s Team Speed Racer won the hearts of Southern California and a day of high-speed go-kart racing with their seamless replica of the famous Mach 5.

Additional crafts that braved the unforgiving course included a lifeguard tower, a grand piano, an oversized bottle of Tapatío hot sauce, a giant brain, a banana hammock, the Hollywood sign and college rivals USC and UCLA mascots.

STARS, SPEED AND SWEAT

Teams were judged on three criteria – speed, creativity and showmanship – by a panel of celebrity judges including acting legend Erik Estrada, “American Idol” contestant Kimberly Caldwell, motocross star and World Record holder Ronnie Renner, ESPN SportsCenter Host Stan Verrett and X Games host Sal Masekela. Estrada said the event, “was a lot of fun – Red Bull really made a nice contribution to the community,” whereas Renner couldn’t get over the day’s crashes which gained instant respect from the world class athlete: “Let’s face it, you can get hurt here just as bad as you can at the X Games – and these guys aren’t professional athletes, so it’s pretty cool.” 

Angelenos were also met with a few familiar voices over the loudspeaker including Jillian Barberie Reynolds and Paul Rodriguez, who both hosted the day’s festivities.

Toledo, Ohio Mayor Carty Finkbeiner, who is already up for a recall vote, defended the ticketing of several cars over the past week who were parked in their owners driveway. How can they do that? They just found an old law prohibiting drivers from parking on “unpaved” surfaces.. and technically gravel is unpaved.

Mayor Finkeiner is defending the citations and the city’s acting commisioner of Streets, Bridges, and Harbor, Susan Fredrick- the writer of the tickets.

During a press conference on Monday the Mayor refused to answer a question posed by a reporter, asking if the gravel driveway crackdown was related to the city’s budget crisis.

Thankfully City Councilman Michael Collins disagrees with the tickets, calling them “Micky Mouse nonsense”. He has promised residents he’ll try to have the tickets recinded.

A 75-year old Maple tree came crashing down Monday in the middle of Broadway Street in Boulder, Colorado. Nothing unusual until you consider it fell on not one, but two, Prius. We even have video of the aftermath.

Diana Barnett was driving her light-green Toyota Prius with her 18-year old daughter in the passenger seat when she saw a large green blur fall in front of her followed by a “big crash.”  In the aftermath Barnett’s Prius was impaled by a large branch from a 75-year old Maple tree blown over by a strong microburst of wind.  The branch came down so violently it pierced the front windshield and traveled to the floor-board.

Luckly Barnett and her daughter were not seriously injured, although Barnett did go to the hostpital with back pain.

But if a rouge tree taking out revenge on a Prius isn’t strange enough, consider this… another light-green Prius traveling in the opposite direction, driven by Lisa Bennett was also hit.

Barnett said she’s often told her husband that “you can’t throw a stick in Boulder without hitting a Prius.”

“Today, it got two of them,” she said.

Audi and BMW have been European arch rivals for years.   Through marketing and wit we’ve seen the duo trade shots at one another in some pretty ingenious ways- however Audi should have known when they put this billboard up BMW wouldn’t let it slide.

In southern California, Audi’s got a series of billboards out that read, “Your move, BMW.” (That’s smooth chess talk for “eat my dust, bitch.”)

In response, Juggernaut Advertising released some BMW M3 imagery under the headline “Checkmate.” Outdoor ad space was purchased in the foreground of Audi’s billboards, so at certain angles you can see both challenge and response. See them as they ought to be seen: while driving westbound on Santa Monica Blvd, perched on Beverly Glen in West LA.

It’s that time of the month faithful readers! The car commercial of the month goes to the new hilarious Honda Odyssey  commercial that is current playing on TV. Van lovers across the world young and old learn to “Respect The Van” in their new commercial campaign. I don’t think there is anything else like seeing old school vans flying through the air to brighten your day!

Mini attempted some April Fool’s fun of their own today- sending off a press release to the media announcing that they had invented a “perpetual motion” magnetic propulsion drive system. The “system” would “extend the range of its MINI E to several hundred, possibly even thousands of miles, on a single overnight charge of electricity.”  Oh, those guys in New Jersey are hilarious!

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – April 1, 2009… MINI USA looks set to take a world lead in fuel efficiency with the announcement today (April 1) of a revolutionary magnetic propulsion system that will extend the range of its MINI E to several hundred, possibly even thousands of miles, on a single overnight charge of electricity.

Drawing on the same Magnetic Tow Technology (MTT) which was announced by BMW in the UK today, MINI USA has developed its own unique Propulsion / Repulsion 0401 (PR0401) System that is just one short step away from perpetual motion in an automobile.

MINI’s PR 0401 System uses a series of magnets situated in the MINI E’s moving and fixed parts of each of its four wheel hubs to both pull and push the wheels in the desired direction, exploiting the magnets’ natural tendency to attract and repel. Not only does this system allow the MINI PR to travel extraordinary distances for just a few cents, it produces virtually no noise as the electric motor can be switched off once the car is moving.

Professor Lirpa Loof, Head of Magnetic Attraction Technology at MINI USA, said: “The Mini E is already leading the way in EV performance, reliability and eco-friendliness but this amazing new system will push it onto another level. We could soon be seeing families travel across the USA from coast to coast for just a couple of bucks.”

“The only energy this system uses is a small draw on the battery to start the vehicle moving forward and then the magnets take over and their natural properties do the rest. This has to be the ultimate range extender,” he added. “Anyone who has played with magnets as a kid or travelled on a Maglev train will understand precisely how this technology works and the kind of performance we are talking about.”

Once moving, only tiny amounts of electric current are required to switch on and off the magnets, as the polarity of the fixed and moving magnets is rapidly switched from positive to negative. The magnets first attract and then quickly repel each other pushing the wheels in the desired direction – either forward or reverse.

One challenge that Professor Loof faced with the PR system was the speed of the MINI EV PR… and how to control it! The speed at which the magnets attract and repel each other is instantaneous, which means in theory the vehicle is capable of phenomenal speeds, restricted only by the time it takes to switch the magnets’ polarity and the wind resistance and drag of the MINI PR’s body. The MINI EV PR development vehicles are currently restricted to a top speed of 250 mph.

“For years, engineers have dreamed of developing perpetual motion for transport,” said Professor Loof, “And thanks to MINI PR, it looks like we are almost there.”

The Hummer brand has few fans these days days and we’re guessing the owner of this Suzuki is not one of them.

Meta data encoded in the photos suggest this accident happened in the Netherlands, perhaps Rotterdam. Sadly, the 21 year old driving the Suzuki did not survive. It’s interesting to see how little damage the H3 has despite totally destroying the Suzuki.

Walking through this year’s Detroit Auto Show was interesting to say the least. Smaller booths, better cars, fewer frills. But, despite the scale-back, I still found 10, randomly funny things that left me scratching my head.

Here is my own personal Top 10 2009 Detroit Auto Show Oddities

#10: I’m too SRXY

The new Cadillac SRX looks amazing.  The tag-line “Passion is SRXY”- well sort of tacky.

#9: We won! Nah nah nah nah nah!

Shortly after the Genesis was announced as 2009 North American Car of the Year- Hyundai was proudly waving this huge banner. We’re all for marketing your achievements, but Hyundai didn’t know they were going to win, and thus this banner was made up ahead of time just in case. At least we can agree the Genesis deserved it.

#8: “Ahh, my eyes!” Legacy Concept

Subaru used this year’s show to present the future direction of the Subaru Legacy.  In photos, the concept looked pretty decent. In person, the monochrome and highly reflective paint made it hard to look at.  Dimmer switch anyone?

#7: What’s the c-c-concept?

We do give a ton of credit to Ford for bringing the Lincoln brand back into the spot light.  The new MKT should do pretty well.  But the point of a small concept that looked just like it? Lost on us. Even Lincoln seemed in the dark to exact purpose of the “C Concept”.  From the press release- “One of the most eye-catching elements of the seating is the laser-engraved floral etching on the passenger side…”

#6: Happy car is happy to see you

When the first photos of the new Mazda 3 came out in November we passed judgment on the over-exuberant front grille.  After seeing the new model in person, my personal feelings are 100% clear. It’s hideous.

#5: Does that look level to you?

Seeing a Mustang and MKT displayed on their side was actually pretty cool,  but when I heard a Ford rep coolly joke, “Like our new super sticky tires?” it’s amazing how fast the novelty wore off.

#4: Mercedes Zero

Like every other manufacturer, Mercedes joined the electric craze and introduced their Blue Zero Concept.  Que the obligatory green paint, over-styled “modern” exterior, and plastic wheel-covers. Zero emissions or Zero taste?

#3: Don’t mind the Bugatti

Talk about spending your booth budget all in one place. Literally. This stunning Bugatti Veyron was hanging out behind the Maybach display. No signs, no decorations, nothing. Just a rope, some gray carpet, a few plants and a security guard who looked bored out of his mind.

#2: We don’t want you here…go away

Booth design 101 could be a whole college course. Bright and cheery for the family brands- sleek and intriguing for the upscale badges.  Acura took the dark, creepy, and cold approach. Not only was it visually uncomfortable, hard to photograph, and chilly- but also devoid of any media folk.  Looking at the new TL- maybe that was the point.

#1: Jalopnik’s electric wheelchair

We’re all for cool toys. Who hasn’t secretly wanted to take an electric wheelchair for a spin around the mall once or twice?  The boys over at Jalopnik took the fantasy a bit too far. Don’t get me wrong- great website and great group of writers. It’s just that, scooting around with an electric car inside a convention center compact enough to walk in 10 minutes makes you look like a toolbag.  Even more annoying was the horn that echoed through Cobo every time they wanted to pass someone as they sped up the aisles to the next press conference faster than anyone else.

Residents of Tempe, Arizona got an early Christmas present this year, courtesy Santa’s helpers.

A group of Santa look-a-likes cheerfully covered red light cameras around the city. The very generous gift was captured on film, purportedly by someone within the group.

The video’s description lends us to believe the group may have a beef with the authorities.

Only Santa knows who is naughty and nice, not Redflex, DPS, or the Border Patrol.

Surprisingly, authorities say nothing illegal was done and that they knew about the prank when it was pulled off a few weeks back.  No damage was done to the cameras. The video was posted yesterday and has since been viewed over 40,000 times.

Update: We’ve now read that the Tempe Police are investigating.  Considering there was no permanent damage done, the thought of wasting tax payer money on a petty prank seems pretty “Grinch”.

Genetic algorithms are in short, computer simulations that use the basic principles of evolution to automatically refine, perfect, and develop concepts and ideas.  Multiple candidates of a solution are tried with the the “best” making it to the next “round”.  There they are refined, mutated, or discarded for a better solution. The process is essentially endless. So what happens when you apply Genetic algorithms to a “car” and let it run?  You can find out…

Of course, there’s no real purpose to this other than to see what happens.  A classic time waster.  However- the coolest part is that each and every time – the solutions and evolution of your little two wheeled vehicle change. Try running the link in two windows or tabs and see what happens. You can let them go for a few minutes, days, or weeks. Your little guy may start out a little awkward but give it time and chances are things will improve.

There’s not much documentation to go along with this- however from what we can surmise the red dashed circles are weight/centers of gravity. The blue circles are wheels.  The variations you’ll see if you let it run long enough are pretty interesting. If the red circles hit the ground or the car tips- the variation resets.  Each iteration has a time limit- so if your car resets for no reason that’s why.

We caught this picture floating around the web this morning, and well, it speaks for itself.  Everyone loves a hot pickup truck with realistic flames in the paint but…

British-based luxury car insurer Hiscox recently studied the effects of a car’s sound on women. Participants were asked to listen to the engine sound of various cars- economy to exotic. Their reaction to each was measured by testing testosterone levels immediately after listening.

In this case, the old saying “women love expensive cars” takes on a whole new meaning. Apparently, 100% of the time, women participant’s testosterone levels rose the most after listening to a Maserati. If you didn’t know… slight rises in testosterone levels have been known to, ahem, put a lady “in the mood.”  Too much testosterone.. and.. you know…

So to have a little fun with the study results Maserati has teamed up with GQ and offered out 2,000 ringtones to anyone who sends a txt to “707070″ with the line “Maserati” in it.

As of right now, all 2,000 have been snatched up. Lucky for us, we managed to get a copy before the limit was hit. Check it out and download below.  We dare you to play it around a few women and see what happens.

You and your team of 4-6 drivers must first build your car for the race… but there is a catch. You are limited to a $500.00 budget for your race car. So choose wisely on your car choice at your local junkyard, as you may need some extra cash for making it run properly without going over your $500 limit. Safety equipment such as the roll cage, racing seat, seat belts, helmet, tires are excluded from the $500 limit as you have to meet certain safety restrictions in order to race. But be sure you are able to prove that what you are driving only costs $500 for it will undergo inspections by the race judges (yes there are judges that wear black gowns and white curly wigs).

Winning the 24 Hours of LeMons race is not easy but winning that cash prize is very rewarding. They have various categories of winners, some of them are: Distance Winner, Index of Effluence Winner, Peoples Choice Award, etc. A very popular and fun way to celebrate this fun race is to give your car a theme; everything from the paint to costumes that the drivers wear. This is race is all about having a safe, and fun time while still being competitive with your fellow racers. The next race will be “Yee-Haw Its LeMons” on October 18-19 at the Mercedes-Benz of Sugar Land Road Course (Houston), Angleton, TX. The last race of this year will be “LeMons Arse-Freeze-Apalooza” on December 27-28 at the Thunderhill Raceway Park, Willows, CA. We look forwards to the future of these great racing events and we hope one day to join the ranks of the LeMons Racers next year.
