Based on the Gallardo LP 560-4, the Super Trofeo is a limited edition Lamborghini meant exclusively for cup racing. There will only be 30 Super Trofeo models built. All will be sold to individual enthusiasts and dealer teams for competition in a one-make racing series conceived exclusively for the car. Lamborghini will keep one Super Trofeo for itself- commissioning “well-known” guest drivers to take a seat behind the wheel.
The series, commencing in May of 2009, will travel for guest appearances at six race events. Venues the the series will visit include Silverstone in the UK, Adira Raceway in Italy, Norisring in Germany, in Spa Belgium, in Barcelona Spain, and on the Paul Ricard racetrack in France.
Last week the Lamborghini development team alongside engineers from Pirelli began putting the Gallaro Super Trofeo through its paces at the Vallelunga Race Track outside of Rome. They report the initial results are impressive.
The focus of the testing session was on chassis and tire setup. “During the 40 minute race, the drivers are not permitted to change the tyres. Therefore, we have to pay particularly close attention to the durability of the slicks,” explained Giorgio Sanna, a Lamborghini test driver (wouldn’t you love that job?-ed).
Lamborghini also ran through individual calibration options for the Super Trofeo- aiming to setup the car for various tracks and drivers. Lap times achieved at Vallenlunga were faster than any other single-brand trophy race car. Lamborghini did not comment however what those lap times were.
The Gallardo Super Trofeo is a modified LP 560-4, powered by the new 5.2L Lamborghini V10. It transfers power through an e.gear six-speed “robotized” gear box and permanent all-wheel drive. The chassis has been reworked for racing duty and equipped with heavy duty brakes and racing ABS. A large adjustable rear wing made of carbon fiber has also been added alongside a specialized steering wheel and interior instruments.
